Sharif and Sulfiati Harris originally moved to the Badger area about four years ago to help establish a small retreat
center for Subud California at the property that was called the Badger Inn, and which is now called Seven Circles Retreat.
During the last four years they have become very involved in the local community, Sharif as a realtor and a member of the
Central Sierra Chamber of Commerce, and Sulfiati as an art teacher in the local school and as part of a team running the Tuning
In arts camps at Seven Circles.
As the retreat center was being developed many Subud members relocated here, and
have also become involved in the community. The photos are of some of the events that have been put on by Subud members
in the area.
We have gotten to know the various other groups living up here in this small community, which
also includes the Miramonte and Pinehurst areas about 10 - 15 miles north and west of Badger. There are: - ranchers
who's families have lived in this area since the early 1900's,
- Cedarbrook - cabins built around
1920-1930 by Mennonites from a town in the Valley (Reedley),
- the Pinehurst Lodge (bar and restaurant) built around
the same time
- a large Hare Krishna (American Hindu) community has existed for about 20 years in Badger; they have
a big meeting in June every year which draws 500 people
- a mix of artists, retired physicists, musicians
and others with varied and interesting backgrounds
- A large development known as "Badger Creek", which is
zoned as a separate town with a landing strip, meeting halls, and the infrastructure for many homes. This is in
a place that was used by Synanon about 20 years ago, was in complete disrepair, but which has been completely cleaned
up.
