What
is the cost?
We have estimated the total cost per family
for the finished home and use of community amenities to be about $250,000. There are many unknowns and we are working
on a more complete projection of costs as we start dealing with these unknowns. As we get more specific numbers we will
be able to say what the cost of the lot and community amenities will be. When people join us they can work on the plans
and costs for their own home, using our work as a guide. It is possible also for single people could join
together and build a duplex or triplex unit.
In what other ways will this be a "green"
community?
We are hoping to incorporate some of the best new green technologies, such as solar panels
for electricity generation, solar thermal hot water systems, rainwater collection, passive solar day lighting, low-flow toilets,
etc. Hopefully we can make these affordable by getting tax credits, by buying several units at once, and by using
sweat equity whenever possible.
What about permitting and zoning?
Badger is in Tulare County which is very amenable to strawbale
building.
As for zoning, the property is located in an area that is zoned for multi-family homes. Tulare
County is generally fairly easy to work with.
Can we
find a local builder who knows strawbale?
A local man (Bruce Roberts ) is part of an award-winning
building company that specializes in green building. We have lived in this area for about five years and also
know many local people who can help with various phases of the construction.
What size are the rooms?
The plan is drawn at 1” = 10’. The
whole home is 40 ft diameter with room sizes varying from 11 x 13 to 24 x 14. The lot size in the drawing
is about 100’ x 100’.
The building is about 1225 sq ft if you count the indoor patio, and 1025 if you do not count the patio as part of
the square footage. Remember that this plan is just a suggestion and will be adjusted for our site and our needs.
Those joining with us can use plans like our house, or can adjust them as they like.
