The Practicalities

An affordable green community in the Sierra foothills of central California.

The vision is to create an intentional community in the foothills of Tulare County, California, just east of the San Joaquin Valley in a small community called Badger.  The property faces east, towards the Sierra Nevada mountains and Kings Canyon National Park.

The name "earthpod":

EARTH to symbolize ecological values, and

POD as in a seed pod that grows hope for the future, and also as in critters banded together in a grouping for efficiency and protection, like a pod of whales.

The community would initially consist of four family homes on ten acres.  The homes would be built with strawbale construction using plans by Hubble and Hubble of San Diego, California.  The families would own their own homes and share ownership of the surrounding land and any amenities built there in common.  The property will be developed using the principles of permaculture, baubiology, and the latest green innovations (solar power, etc.).  Costs will be kept down by having each home be a compact size (about 1225 square feet), by having a basic design and by using recycled materials whenever possible.
